Try AVG the free version is very good and updates well. have never tried the paid for version but expect it would give you more bells and whistles.

You'll get a lot of people recommending Nortons (that because it comes preloaded on many off-the-shelf-systems) Nortons is a system hog and I always remove it and install AVG free edition.

Get a good firewall (zone alarm) and a couple of anti spyware/malware scanners as well run regular scans and always update all of the above programs regularly
