I don't think that the noise is related to some malware. No PC security product can possibly protect you from every new spyware and malware threat.

Some of these new threats would be undetected by most of the popular security programs, including the ones we all use. Some antivirus will detect spywares but can't delete them so don't think they don't work is just that they are not designed to solve those issues.

Most of anti-virus software install some sort of protection that may be called live protect, virus guard, virus shield , etc. This protection programs are installed as windows services (http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_gui...

These services are run very soon (Normally as soon as possible when their dependencies are satisfied ) . So they are run in background before you login to your system.

These service programs normally run in background without interacting with user directly and of course without showing any user interfaces. But when you run the shortcut to the software a Graphical User Interface (GUI) is show to you and is attached to the background service process. This doesn't mean you have just enabled the protection, it is only a graphical tool to monitor and configure protection and settings.

Is there an icon in your taskbar? Right click on it, go to preferences, or options, and see if there is a box you can click to make it load when Windows starts.
I think this is not a problem. As long as you update your AV software and do frequent system scans, this is not a problem. Your AV software will most probably scanned all the startup items for viruses, so that you can ignore the fact that it boots last.
Don't worry. It is far more important that your firewall starts early in the boot process. The few seconds it takes your anti-virus to start is not important as long as your firewall is protecting you from attacks on your ports after a reboot.

I use Avast antivirus, Windows Defender, Ad-Aware Personal Edition and Spybot Search n Destroy. The 1st two are resident scanners, last 2 manual Oh PC behind a hard ware router firewall :P

Avast is great, I've never had any trouble with it. AVG would never update and kept giving me error messages.

I can't say which is best, I think that is a personal opinion, but AVG does a really good job, doesn't consume very much of your computer resources, works in the back ground. I use AVG and just love the way it works.

You'll get a lot of people recommending Nortons (that because it comes preloaded on many off-the-shelf-systems) Nortons is a system hog and I always remove it and install AVG free edition.

Get a good firewall (zone alarm) and a couple of anti spyware/malware scanners as well run regular scans and always update all of the above programs regularly
