I don't think that the noise is related to some malware. No PC security product can possibly protect you from every new spyware and malware threat.

Some of these new threats would be undetected by most of the popular security programs, including the ones we all use. Some antivirus will detect spywares but can't delete them so don't think they don't work is just that they are not designed to solve those issues.

These services are run very soon (Normally as soon as possible when their dependencies are satisfied ) . So they are run in background before you login to your system.

These service programs normally run in background without interacting with user directly and of course without showing any user interfaces. But when you run the shortcut to the software a Graphical User Interface (GUI) is show to you and is attached to the background service process. This doesn't mean you have just enabled the protection, it is only a graphical tool to monitor and configure protection and settings.

Is there an icon in your taskbar? Right click on it, go to preferences, or options, and see if there is a box you can click to make it load when Windows starts.
I think this is not a problem. As long as you update your AV software and do frequent system scans, this is not a problem. Your AV software will most probably scanned all the startup items for viruses, so that you can ignore the fact that it boots last.
Don't worry. It is far more important that your firewall starts early in the boot process. The few seconds it takes your anti-virus to start is not important as long as your firewall is protecting you from attacks on your ports after a reboot.

Although McAfee is not so good as Norton (Norton can kill 96% of virus whereas McAfee only 93%), you should not use the Yahoo version of Norton.

Reasons

1. the Yahoo package is only a trial version for 30days

2. you may not be able to un-install that yahoo version of Norton. (You may have seen many complain in Yahoo Answer about that)

3. McAfee and Norton anti-virus are programs and they would hang up one and others due to software bugs. Hence only one is allowed to be active.

Both Norton and MacAfee have on-access scans which will scan files as you open them to make sure they don't have viruses. A lot of people don't like this because it is very resource intense to constantly be scanning files for viruses and will significantly impact performance on the system. Also, these tools are not free. But remember, you generally get what you pay for. You could use some free antivirus software you find on the internet somewhere, but it may not provide the quality or ease of use as some of the non-free vendors. Think about it....

What you can do is download the software to your desk top. Then unplug from server, and remove any and all protection previously that is on your computer. They could interfere with the new software.

Install the software, and if it askes for a code number, then call your provider and they will help you with a number and then let you know when to plug in your provider again. They should be able to talk you through what you need to do. I had to do this the other day. I was with my server for sometime getting the Protection set up. Also there is a site that may help you.

Sorry, I'm not sure about Norton, but Avast! anti virus works very well. My dad is a networking Technician, and that is what he has all his clients use. Plus it is what I use.
What I would do is ditch the antivirus and get a firewall set up and download and install CCleaner. It will do everything that an Anitvirus will do plus more. When you go to your firewall through your Control Panel, it should have a link to download some firewalls. If not then search Google for 'freeware Firewall'. I have a set up like this and my computer runs faster than before I had my antivirus running 24/7.

No offense but Norton sucks. My friend used to have it and there was still things wrong with it after he had run the virus scan. When he bought another sofware there was 52 viruses that Norton did even pick up. I think you should get rid of both.

The two best are McAfee and Norton. They each offer multiple suits with different solutions. The basic solution set should include Antivirus and Antispyware.

My personal preference is McAfee. I've used it for years with no issues.

First, the CPU is the Central Processing Unit...it is a little chip inside your case on the motherboard...just to let you know ;-)

You can increase your virtual memory by deleting files off your hard drive. Try using Disk Cleanup or CCleaner. This could be why your computer is freezing a lot. You might also want to get some more RAM for your computer if it is using virtual memory so much. Also, Norton is very cumbersome...I recommend AVG because it is free and works great!

There are many reason for that, if the files are corrupt or missing all you have to do is to format your hard drive because there's no files you can lose. Run OS you prefer and then don't install under any concept AVG antivirus and CCleaner, they suck, full of spywares and adwares.

Virtual memory is low according to Ram and many programs running, go to control panel--system--general and there you see your Ram, 128MB or 256MB. 512 MB would be perfect.

If you originally downloaded the anti-virus program what you want to do it find the original download program and move that off to CD ROM and then when you get your new pc all back up and running, install it again.

If you paid for the serial number of a downloaded program you may be able to skip this step, get your pc up and running, and download the program file again and enter the old serial number.

It all depends. If you had a friend install a program and take the disc back with them, then you're out of luck.

Hope this makes sense. I don't think you can simply COPY OVER the installed program. You'll need to use the set up file.

Both of the free versions provide adequate protection......In fact, I have used both of them to scan computers that were infected and both times, they picked up the virus.

Just remember that you can only have one AV installed at any time on your computer. Make sure you uninstall the one you have on your computer before installing a new one.......Neither one will work correctly if both are installed.
